Why the highlands close the itinerary down

A ring road map drawn in summer includes Landmannalaugar and the F-roads that reach it, and a winter buyer keeps that map without noticing the roads on it are seasonal. The F208 and F225 open only around early and mid June on average, and Ferðafélag Íslands runs its own Landmannalaugar route from about 20 June to 15 September. Neither exists on a winter package, because neither is open. What a winter itinerary keeps instead is Route 1 and the paved roads off it: the Golden Circle loop, the south coast as far as conditions allow, and Reykjavik itself as the base every day returns to. This is not a smaller version of a summer trip so much as a different one, built around the roads that stay open and the two products, ice caves and the aurora, that summer cannot offer at all. A package sold as a shortened ring road should say plainly which stops it drops, rather than let a buyer discover the gap on the road.
