Christmas Land Of The Northern Lights - 5 days

  • Guide works in English
  • Duration per the operator: 5 days

Five winter days out of Reykjavik

This is a five-day package that uses Reykjavik as its base and starting point, run by On The Go Tours with guiding in English throughout. The tour is built around the northern lights, but it is not a single-night chase. It spreads the search across several nights, which matters in Iceland in winter, where cloud cover can end an evening's hunt before it begins. The trip is fully guided, meaning you travel with a guide who handles the logistics and the driving, and you do not need to rent a car or navigate winter roads yourself. The price starts at 2,512 USD. That figure puts it in the middle of the 62 five- and six-day packages in its category, neither a budget option nor the most expensive way to spend five days in the country. It is aimed at travellers who want the lights handled for them, with the structure of a set itinerary rather than the freedom of self-drive.

The catalogue distinguishes three states, and the third matters most: not stated does not mean excluded, it means unresolved.

What the price covers and what it does not

The operator states that food is included on this tour. That is the clearest part of the pricing picture. The 2,512 USD entry price covers the guiding, the transport between stops, and the meals named in the itinerary. There are no admission fees or parking charges at any of the places this tour visits, so you will not be handed a separate bill at a gate or a car park along the way. What the operator does not say is just as important for your budget. There is no mention of drinks, snacks, or any meals beyond the ones listed, so plan for those yourself. The operator also does not offer free cancellation on this booking. That is the exception among the 1,392 listings in the wider catalogue, where 730 grant it. Here, you are committing to the dates when you pay, so read the terms before you confirm. No extra costs are listed as being added on the day, and no official figure is published for anything beyond the entry price.

The order follows the weight of evidence and not the commission. Every value comes from the same catalogue fields, so that the columns compare.

How many people have judged it?

The number of ratings per listing, the score in brackets. A score without the population behind it tells you nothing.

A score with too little behind it

The tour carries a rating of 4.0 out of 5, but that score comes from only three reviews. Three reviews is not a sample you can plan around. It tells you that the people who did review it were broadly satisfied, but it does not tell you whether your experience will match theirs. In its category of 62 five- and six-day packages, this tour ranks 20th when ordered by the strength of the evidence behind it, which is a different measure from the raw score. By number of reviews, it sits 26th of 62. The neighbouring tours in the same category have far more feedback behind them. The Iceland Northern Lights tour, also five days, has a 4.7 from 14 reviews, and the Land of the Northern Lights tour, also five days, has a 4.4 from 183 reviews. Those numbers give you a firmer basis for comparison. If the score matters to you, this one is too thin to carry much weight on its own.

A December trip in the cold dark

This is a Christmas tour, so it runs in the heart of the Icelandic winter. The climate chart above shows what that means in numbers. In December, the average high in Reykjavik is 3 degrees and the average low is minus 2. January and February are nearly identical, with highs around 3 degrees and lows at minus 2. The daylight is the bigger constraint. This is the darkest part of the year, and the northern lights need darkness to show, which is the point of travelling now. But the short days also limit what you can see and do between sunrise and sunset. The tour's own stops are not named in detail, so the rhythm of the days depends on where the guide takes you and how the weather behaves. The cold is manageable with proper layers, but the hours of usable light are short, and the evenings are long and dark, which is exactly when the lights are most likely to appear.

Meeting the winter on its own terms

The tour starts in Reykjavik, a city of 139,804 people, with a greater capital region of 253,230. The city itself covers 244 square kilometres and received its charter on 18 August 1786. From there, the guide takes you out to look for the lights. The practical reality of a winter tour in Iceland is that the weather decides the plan. Roads can close, and a guide who turns back because conditions are unsafe is doing the job properly. The stops on this itinerary are not staffed attractions with desks and queues. They are places you reach by car and then stand in the open air, looking up. That means you dress for standing still in the cold, not for walking into a heated building. The guide handles the driving and the decisions about where to go each night. Your job is to be ready for the conditions when you get there.

Who should book this tour

This suits travellers who want the northern lights handled without the logistics of a self-drive trip in winter. You get a guide who speaks English, transport, and meals, and you do not have to read the weather forecasts and road conditions yourself. It also suits people who want the reassurance of a set itinerary over five days rather than a single evening chase. If you are weighing it against the alternatives in the same category, the Northern Lights Escape runs six days and starts at 2,265 USD, with a 4.6 from 51 reviews. The five-day Laugavegur Trek in Huts is a different kind of trip entirely, a hiking tour at 2,962 USD, and it is not about the lights. If you are travelling on a tighter budget, the Land of the Northern Lights tour, also five days, starts at 1,645 USD and has 183 reviews behind it. This tour is not for anyone who wants flexibility in their dates, since there is no free cancellation, and not for anyone who prefers to plan their own days rather than follow a guided structure.

Common questions

Is admission included?

The catalogue does not say. Where the route is waterfalls and beaches there is nothing to pay; ask if it includes a paid attraction.

How long does the package really take?

The catalogue gives 5 days. That is the operator's own figure and covers the tour itself, not the time you spend getting to the meeting point.

Is there a guide who works in English?

Yes, the operator lists English as a guiding language. That is the operator's commitment, not a checked property of the person on the day.

Where does it start and end?

From Reykjavik to Keflavik.

Does this listing's rating mean anything?

Not much yet. 4.0 out of 5 from only 3 ratings is too few to draw a conclusion from, however high the score.

Where do I find all the data on this package?

In the data sheet on this page. It carries every field on the tour, on each place it visits and on the climate of the departure city, each with its source, and it downloads as a CSV.
