Reykjavík: Best of Golden Circle, Hidden Gems & Lava Tunnel

Eleven hours from Reykjavik to the lava tunnel

This tour takes you from Reykjavik through the Golden Circle and down to the south coast, finishing with a visit to a lava tunnel, all in a single 11-hour day. You travel in English with a guide who stays with the group throughout. It is a long day built for travellers who want the classic sights and something less travelled in one go, rather than choosing between them. The route reaches Vík í Mýrdal, the village at the southern edge of the country's main ring road, which puts you well beyond the usual Golden Circle loop. At roughly 229 USD per person, it sits in the middle of the price range for Golden Circle tours from Reykjavik, and it is the kind of day that suits someone who would rather see more in one stretch than piece together separate trips.

What the price covers and what it does not

The 229 USD entry price covers the guided tour in English, transport from Reykjavik, and the stops along the way. Food is not part of the deal, so you should carry what you want to eat or buy something at the places where the tour pauses. The operator offers free cancellation, which gives you some flexibility if plans change before the day starts. None of the places on the itinerary charges admission or parking, so there are no gate costs to budget for on top of the listed price. What you pay is what the tour costs, apart from your own meals. The tour is not wheelchair accessible, so if that is a requirement for you, this is not the right fit.

The order follows the weight of evidence and not the commission. Every value comes from the same catalogue fields, so that the columns compare.

How many people have judged it?

The number of ratings per listing, the score in brackets. A score without the population behind it tells you nothing.

What five ratings can tell you

The tour holds a perfect 5.0 score, but that score comes from only five reviews. Five ratings are not enough to draw a reliable picture of what most travellers experience. In the catalogue of 162 Golden Circle tours, this one ranks 83rd by number of reviews, which puts it squarely in the middle of the pack for how much feedback it has gathered. By price it ranks 58th, again mid-field. The score itself tells you little; the thin base behind it tells you the tour is still building its reputation. You are not buying a product with thousands of verified opinions behind it, so weigh the price and the itinerary more heavily than the rating when you decide.

The day, stop by stop

The order follows the usual run of the day. Each stop names what is there and the figures behind it; everything else is in the data sheet.

  1. Meeting point

You make your own way there; the duration counts from that point.

  2. Reykjavik

When the long daylight works in your favour

The tour runs 11 hours, so the season matters more than it would for a half-day trip. From June through August, Reykjavik sees highs of 13 to 15 degrees and lows that stay above 7 degrees, and the daylight stretches well into the evening. That gives you comfortable conditions for the outdoor stops and enough light to make the long route worthwhile. In the winter months, highs hover around 3 degrees and lows drop to minus 2, with daylight limited to a few hours around midday. An 11-hour tour in December means much of it happens in twilight or darkness, which changes what you see at the waterfall and the village stops. The shoulder months of May and September offer a compromise: highs of 10 to 11 degrees, lows around 4 to 6 degrees, and noticeably longer days than midwinter. If you have flexibility, the brighter half of the year gets you more out of the distance this tour covers.

What the day looks like on the ground

You set off from Reykjavik and head east on the ring road. The first part of the day follows the familiar Golden Circle sights, then the route continues south rather than turning back toward the city. That is what makes this an 11-hour day rather than a shorter loop. The stops themselves are open-air sights: waterfalls, viewpoints, and the black sand coastline near Vík í Mýrdal. You will be outside for most of them, so the weather does the talking. Rain and wind are common on the south coast, and the paths around the waterfalls stay wet all year. The lava tunnel is the one stop where you go underground, which offers a break from the elements. The guide leads the group in English and sets the pace for each stop. There is no fixed schedule published for how long you spend at each place, so expect the guide to allocate time based on the day's conditions and the group's rhythm.

Who should take this tour and who should look elsewhere

This tour is for the traveller who wants the Golden Circle and the south coast in one day and accepts that it means a long time on the bus. It suits someone who prefers a small-group feel with a guide who speaks English throughout, and who does not need wheelchair access. If you are short on time and want the essentials without the extra distance to Vík, the Golden Circle Full-Day Tour with Kerid Crater runs 7 to 8.5 hours and costs from 91 USD, with a far larger base of 26,671 reviews behind its 4.8 score. If you want a similar length to this one but with a soak at the end, the Golden Circle, Kerid, and Secret Lagoon Tour runs 10 hours from 132 USD. For the same 11 hours but with a different finale, the Golden Circle, Kerid Crater, and Blue Lagoon Tour costs from 257 USD. This tour's draw is the combination of the classic circuit with the lava tunnel and the south coast village, all in one stretch. If that mix is not what you are after, one of the shorter or cheaper options likely fits better.

Common questions

Is admission included?

The catalogue does not say. Where the route is waterfalls and beaches there is nothing to pay; ask if it includes a paid attraction.

How long does the tour really take?

The catalogue gives 11 hours. That is the operator's own figure and covers the tour itself, not the time you spend getting to the meeting point.

Is there a guide who works in English?

Yes, the operator lists English as a guiding language. That is the operator's commitment, not a checked property of the person on the day.

Where do I find all the data on this tour?

In the data sheet on this page. It carries every field on the tour, on each place it visits and on the climate of the departure city, each with its source, and it downloads as a CSV.

Does this listing's rating mean anything?

No. 5.0 out of 5 from only 5 is not enough to draw a conclusion from, however high the score.
